If they started the numbering at 3001 and they shared these numbers with other Smith & Wesson handguns would this be an early 1957 gun? Any rough estimate of value would be appreciated. The 39-2 was produced between 1971-1982 and, according to the Supica/Nahas catalog, the last 39-2, serial number A747148, was shipped. from the factory on 15 Feb 1983. The Appendices B, Section 3 shows 39 serial numbers A655001- A745000 were made in 1981.

A Model 10-7 can't have a serial number of C359288 (the B97447 is not a serial) because that C series number is from around 1956 which is before S&W model marked their guns. Check it again to make sure you have the numbers correct or that you have a model marked gun.

As Ed points out, the model 60 is essentially a stainless version of the Chiefs Special. It was the first stainlss steel production revolver made and was introduced in 1965. The "no dash" models were made from 1965 to 1972. R prefix serial numbered guns began in 1969. The 60-1 marked guns started in 1972.

I can say that the Smith and Wesson model 27-2 started having a N prefix to the serial number in 1969.These model 27-2 were made until 1981,when the model 27-3 began production.If your model 27-2 has the target trigger,target hammer,partridge type front sight on a 6in barrel and Goncalo Alves grips then these were started in 1975.I will leave the other thread with photos there for reference, rather than re-posting the whole thing.
