The 1977 silver dollar is the penultimate mintage of the Eisenhower dollar, launched in 1971. It was a return to a larger, heavier dollar coin after a break of some 36 years. And when the last of the series was minted in 1978, it marked the end of the format. The rising price of silver in the 1960s had led to a number of changes to coinage.
