I can think of two ways to build such a game. A free version in which you play to earn or a pay version in which you can buy your slither and either lose your slither (and invested money/crypto) or win better slither via upgrades/levels. You can either from there stop playing and sell back your slither or move on and try to win more, exponentially.

Slither.io can be a little slow, but if there's a delay between moving the mouse and seeing the snake respond it's lag. With boosting I think there is a very brief pause, but turns should begin as soon as you start moving. The lag really is a game killer.
